2018: A Fresh Start

January is one of my favorite months. I love the spirit of new beginnings that comes along with the new year. There is endless potential in a clean slate and I've found that having a clear set of goals for yourself is the best way to harness all those good vibes and turn them into positive (and permanent) change. Having new years resolutions is one thing, but being able to actually maintain and execute them is a whole different story. It requires thoughtful planning and actual energy and daily effort. Deciding what you want out of this new year, whether it be a personal, professional or physical change, is a great start to goal setting, but it's only the first step. I thought a little rundown on how I set resolutions for myself would be a great first blog post for 2018. Plus, one of my goals for the blog this year is to share more lifestyle content (more on that later)! I've broken down my goal setting into 3 basic steps that hopefully, you'll find are helpful and easy to follow!

1. Limit Your Goals

For the past few years, I've tried to set just a handful of goals (maybe 3 to 4) for myself that are realistic and achievable. I've realized that making a laundry list of resolutions eventually becomes too overwhelming and come February/March, I find myself already falling behind. Spoiler alert: it's a serious motivation killer for the rest of the year. When it comes to setting and narrowing down resolutions, start by looking at the aspects of your life you're hoping to improve or change. From there, try to narrow it down to the most important ones. I try to set goals based on three different groups: one professional (including my job + blog), one personal (personal relationships, habits, etc) and one lifestyle (i.e. working out more, better budgeting with money, etc). Start with the big ones, or the ones that are most pressing. There's no rule saying you can't add more to your list as the year goes on, but don't start the year off setting yourself up for discouragement by burying yourself under a long list of things to change.

2. Make a Plan of Action

You can set all the goals you want, but if you don't know where to start, you'll never get going. Making actionable resolutions is the key. Sometimes the steps you need to take to achieve a goal are pretty straightforward. If you want to lose 3 pounds, work out frequently and eat healthy. Easy breezy. But what if you want to get promoted at work? Or you want to increase your following on your blog? Not so clear. I like to start at the end and work backwards. Figure out what you want as your end goal and look at all the steps you need to get there. Don't be afraid to tweak your plan as you go along, or ask others for help or advice. Sometimes seeking out someone in that area of expertise can be helpful. Whatever you do, make sure you have a clear set of steps to follow; doesn't matter if they're daily, weekly or monthly. Small changes over time lead to big results.

3. Stick to the plan

The one thing that will always prove successful is consistency. I know sometimes it can be hard to find the motivation to keep going, especially if you aren't seeing the results, but you can't give up! If you need to take a break, go for it. If you need a shift in perspective, or some sort of daily reminder, that's okay. Do what you need to do to keep moving forward. Every step, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction. Some things may take longer to achieve, but if you keep at it and stick to your plans, there is no reason why you can't get to where you want to be!  

 

As for myself, I have a ton of things I want to do and I haven't quite narrowed down my top three yet, but I'm happy to be sharing it with you guys. I'm so grateful for all of you who support A Little Indiaa and give me the daily motivation to keep blogging. It's tough running a blog, creating content and being your own manager, all while having a full time job and a household to take care of. But I love what I do and I'm ready to take on 2018 and all it has to offer.
